MetaMask is the most popular crypto wallet in the world with over 30 million users. Here's how to set it up properly and securely.
Step 1: Install MetaMask
- Go to metamask.io (verify the URL carefully — use our Risk Scanner if unsure)
- Click "Download" and install the browser extension for Chrome, Firefox, Brave, or Edge
- You can also install the MetaMask mobile app for iOS or Android
Warning: Only install MetaMask from the official website or your browser's official extension store. Never install from a link someone sends you.
Step 2: Create your wallet
- Click "Create a new wallet"
- Set a strong password (this only protects the app, not your funds — your seed phrase is what matters)
- Write down your 12-word seed phrase on paper — not in a file, not a screenshot, not in notes
- Verify your seed phrase by selecting the words in the correct order
- Your wallet is created
Step 3: Secure your wallet
- Back up your seed phrase in at least 2 physical locations
- Enable password lock — set a short auto-lock timer
- Consider a hardware wallet for amounts over $500 — see our Hardware Wallet Quiz
- Never share your seed phrase — not with MetaMask support, not with anyone
Run our Security Checklist to make sure you haven't missed anything.
Step 4: Add networks
MetaMask comes with Ethereum by default. To use cheaper L2 networks:
- Click the network dropdown (top of MetaMask)
- Click "Add network"
- Popular networks to add: Arbitrum One, Base, Optimism, Polygon
Check which networks your wallet supports with our Wallet Compatibility Checker.
Step 5: Your first transaction
- Get some ETH — buy on an exchange and withdraw to your MetaMask address
- Always send a small test amount first — $5-10 to verify everything works
- Check gas fees — use Should I Send Now? to check if it's a good time
- Practice in our sandbox — try our Crypto Sandbox to practice without real money
MetaMask security tips
- Check the URL before every transaction — phishing sites look identical to real ones
- Don't approve unlimited token allowances — use our Signature Decoder to understand what you're approving
- Regularly review connected sites — disconnect sites you no longer use (Settings → Connected Sites)
- Use a hardware wallet for large amounts — MetaMask connects to both Ledger and Trezor
