Cold Storage
Storing cryptocurrency offline in a hardware wallet or other device not connected to the internet.
Explained Simply
Cold storage means keeping your private keys completely offline, making them immune to online hacking. Hardware wallets (Ledger, Trezor) are the most popular cold storage method. Other forms include paper wallets and air-gapped computers. Cold storage is the gold standard for securing large amounts of crypto you do not need to access frequently. The trade-off is inconvenience — you need the physical device to sign transactions. Always keep a backup of your seed phrase in a separate, secure location.
