Halving (Bitcoin Halving)

A scheduled event that cuts the Bitcoin mining reward in half, occurring roughly every four years.

Explained Simply

Every 210,000 blocks (~4 years), Bitcoin's block reward is cut in half. The most recent halving in April 2024 reduced the reward from 6.25 to 3.125 BTC per block. Halvings reduce the rate of new Bitcoin creation, increasing scarcity. Historically, Bitcoin's price has risen significantly in the 12-18 months following each halving, though past performance doesn't guarantee future results. The last Bitcoin will be mined around 2140.

Example

After the 2024 halving, miners earn 3.125 BTC per block instead of 6.25 BTC — cutting the daily new supply from ~900 BTC to ~450 BTC.
