HODL
A crypto strategy of holding assets long-term regardless of price swings, originating from a misspelling of 'hold.'
Explained Simply
HODL originated from a 2013 Bitcoin forum post where a user misspelled 'hold' during a market crash. It became a rallying cry and is now sometimes backronymed as 'Hold On for Dear Life.' HODLing means buying cryptocurrency and holding it through volatility without selling. It is the simplest investment strategy in crypto and avoids the pitfalls of trying to time the market. Many long-term Bitcoin holders who HODLed through multiple 80%+ crashes ended up with significant returns.
Example
Bitcoin dropped from $69,000 to $16,000 in 2022. HODLers who held through the crash saw it recover and surpass previous highs by 2024.
