Sidechain
An independent blockchain that runs parallel to a main chain and is connected via a two-way bridge.
Explained Simply
Sidechains are separate blockchains with their own consensus mechanisms that connect to a parent chain (like Ethereum or Bitcoin) through a bridge. They process transactions independently, reducing load on the main chain. Unlike Layer 2 rollups, sidechains have their own security model and don't inherit the parent chain's security. Examples include Polygon PoS (Ethereum sidechain) and Liquid Network (Bitcoin sidechain). The trade-off is lower security guarantees compared to the main chain.
