What is Ethereum?

Ethereum (ETH) is the world's largest smart contract platform, launched in 2015 by Vitalik Buterin. Unlike Bitcoin, which primarily serves as digital money, Ethereum is a programmable blockchain that powers decentralized applications (dApps), DeFi protocols, NFT marketplaces, and much more.

Following The Merge in September 2022, Ethereum transitioned from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake, reducing energy consumption by ~99.95%. ETH holders can now stake their tokens to help secure the network and earn rewards. The EIP-1559 fee burn mechanism means Ethereum can be deflationary during periods of high network usage.

How to Stake Ethereum

  1. Choose a staking method — Exchange staking (easiest), liquid staking (Lido, Rocket Pool), or solo staking (32 ETH minimum)
  2. Calculate expected returns — Use our Staking Calculator to model rewards
  3. Understand the risks — Slashing, lock-up periods, smart contract risk with liquid staking
  4. Start staking — Most exchanges let you stake with as little as 0.01 ETH

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Ethereum worth today?+
Ethereum's price fluctuates continuously across global exchanges. As of early 2026, ETH typically trades in the $2,000-$4,000 range. Use our DCA Calculator to model investment strategies regardless of current price, or check live prices on Coinbase or Kraken.
How much can I earn staking Ethereum?+
Ethereum staking currently yields approximately 3-5% APY, depending on network conditions and the staking provider. You can stake through exchanges like Coinbase and Kraken, or run your own validator with 32 ETH. Use our Staking Calculator to estimate your returns.
Why are Ethereum gas fees so high?+
Gas fees rise when network demand exceeds capacity. During peak usage, simple transfers can cost $5-50+. Layer 2 networks like Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base offer 90-99% lower fees. Use our Gas Estimator to check current costs and our L2 Fee Comparison to find cheaper alternatives.
Is Ethereum a good investment?+
Ethereum is the largest smart contract platform and hosts the majority of DeFi, NFTs, and dApps. It has strong network effects but faces competition from Solana, Avalanche, and others. This is educational information — do your own research and never invest more than you can afford to lose.
What is the difference between ETH and Bitcoin?+
Bitcoin is primarily a store of value and payment network. Ethereum is a programmable blockchain that supports smart contracts, DeFi applications, NFTs, and more. Bitcoin has a fixed supply of 21M; Ethereum has no hard cap but burns fees to reduce supply. They serve different purposes in a crypto portfolio.
