What is Ethereum?
Ethereum (ETH) is the world's largest smart contract platform, launched in 2015 by Vitalik Buterin. Unlike Bitcoin, which primarily serves as digital money, Ethereum is a programmable blockchain that powers decentralized applications (dApps), DeFi protocols, NFT marketplaces, and much more.
Following The Merge in September 2022, Ethereum transitioned from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake, reducing energy consumption by ~99.95%. ETH holders can now stake their tokens to help secure the network and earn rewards. The EIP-1559 fee burn mechanism means Ethereum can be deflationary during periods of high network usage.
How to Stake Ethereum
- Choose a staking method — Exchange staking (easiest), liquid staking (Lido, Rocket Pool), or solo staking (32 ETH minimum)
- Calculate expected returns — Use our Staking Calculator to model rewards
- Understand the risks — Slashing, lock-up periods, smart contract risk with liquid staking
- Start staking — Most exchanges let you stake with as little as 0.01 ETH
