Explained Simply
Proof of Stake replaces mining with staking. Validators lock up tokens as collateral ('stake') and are randomly selected to validate transactions. If they validate honestly, they earn rewards. If they act maliciously, their stake is 'slashed' (partially destroyed). PoS uses far less energy than Proof of Work. Ethereum transitioned from PoW to PoS in September 2022 (The Merge).
